What is Pinene?

Pinene is a terpene which are aromatic hydrocarbons found in the essential oils of every plant and flower. Terpenes are a natural conduit between our “endocannabinoid system” (ECS) – the body’s largest neurotransmitter network – and specific strains of natural organic compounds that our body can derive health benefits from.

That is a bit too much information for my tastes. Simply put, pinene is a naturally occurring terpene found in rosemary, eucalyptus and many others. Pinene has a wide range of benefits, but here are the main ones:

  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Pain relief
  • Helps protect the gut
  • Bronchodilator
  • Antioxidant

Pinene has two molecular forms: alpha-pinene and beta-pinene. The two are almost identical in structure. With just one molecule in a different location, their features & actions change.

Several studies in recent years have revealed that pinene, particularly alpha-pinene, has shown that it may assist in mood regulation, pain relief, prevent muscular convulsions, suppress appetites and combat feelings of stress, depression and anxiety. Everything you need to get you into the zone. But today, we will focus on the main health benefits.

Exploring the health benefits in more detail?

It has Anti-inflammatory properties

Pinene can reduce inflammation, which can depress the immune system and stress cells and tissues.

It can help with Pain Relief

Pinene can affect the body’s pain receptors to reduce discomfort from conditions such as arthritis and fibromyalgia.

Helps protect the gut

Pinene has been shown to protect the lining of the stomach and other parts of the gastrointestinal system against inflammation and lesions from conditions such as ulcers and Crohn’s disease.

Bronchodilator

Pinene can ease congestion and constriction in the lungs and bronchial areas, making breathing easier for people with asthma and other pulmonary conditions.

It’s an Antioxidant

Pinene can help to protect cells from excessive oxidation, which can break them down and make the body susceptible to a variety of diseases.

Safety & Dosage?

Pinene in small amounts is considered safe. Don't overdo it!

Summary

While alpha-pinene is most commonly used as a food additive and aromatic compound, people have used it since ancient times to promote healing and make use of its medicinal benefits. The anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anti-ulcerative, and memory-aiding effects of alpha-pinene makes it a great tool!
