Health Foods – Benefits of Purchasing Organic Products Online

What used to be an exclusive item seen inside health foods stores, now it is common sight in your local supermarket. Buying organic products online has also become a popular trend due to its convenience and potential cost savings.

But when you pick up an organic apple vs a conventional apple; they both look and smell relatively similar. But the organic apple comes with a heftier price tag, which are in part due to more expensive farming practices. What exactly makes organic food different, and does it justify the bigger cost?

What is organic farming?

The word "organic" refers to the way farmers grow and process agricultural products without the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides or other artificial chemicals. These products include fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy products and meat.

Benefits of Organic Health Foods

  1. Tastes better. It starts from the ground up, organic food starts with the nourishment of the soil, leading to a healthier plant and ultimately a better-tasting product.
  2. Helps protect future generations.Children receive approximately four times the exposure of cancer-causing pesticides in food than adults.
  3. It has higher levels of nutrients. Research shows organic food is far superior when it comes to nutrient content. They are especially higher in antioxidants, vitamin C, iron, magnesium, calcium, and phosphorus, and up to six times higher in salicylic acid which acts as an anti-inflammatory to combat against stress, disease, and hardening of the arteries.
  4. Prevents soil erosion and build healthy soils.Organic farms protect the environment by using organic soil and using natural systems rather than relying on synthetic fertilisers and pesticides.
  5. It helps protect water quality. Groundwater, rivers, and drinking water are contaminated by pesticides and other chemicals commonly used in conventional farming practices.
  6. Free of artificial additives. The use of antibiotics, anti-microbials, hormones, and other growth promotants are prohibited in organic production. Organic food doesn’t contain food additives which can cause health problems such as heart disease, osteoporosis, migraines and hyperactivity.
  7. Organic food production uses less energy than conventional food production. Modern conventional farming uses more petroleum than any other industry. More energy is now used to produce synthetic fertilisers than to till, cultivate and harvest crops. Labour intensive practices such as hand weeding, green manure, and cover crops instead of chemicals are use in organic farms.
  8. Certified organic means GE/GMO-free. Under strict Australian organic certification standards, genetically modified organisms are not allowed.
  9. Support for small farmers. Most organic farms are small, independently owned family farms. Due to economies of scale, many family farms have had to close over the past couple decades due to larger corporations using conventional farming systems. Purchasing organic food supports traditional farming systems and small family farms.

Do 'organic' and 'natural' mean the same thing?

They aren’t the same thing. Generally, ‘natural’ on a food label means that no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives are present. In order to be ‘organic’, the methods and materials used to produce the food ingredient don’t involve pesticides, chemical fertilizers, or artificial chemicals.

Food safety tips

Be sure to keep these tips in mind when choosing to go organic or adding conventional foods into the mix:

  • Choose from a variety of foods from a variety of sources. This will give you a better mix of nutrients and minimize your risk of being exposed to a single pesticide.
  • Buy fruits and vegetables in season when possible. Not only will you save money, but you will be buying food that is fresh with optimum levels of nutrients. Ask your grocer about what is in season, visit your local farmers market or shop online to get access to the freshest stock.
  • Read food labels carefully. Just because a product says it's organic or contains organic ingredients doesn't necessarily mean it's a healthier alternative. Some organic products may still be high in sugar, salt, fat or calories.
  • Wash and scrub fresh fruits and vegetables thoroughly under running water. Washing helps remove dirt, bacteria, and traces of chemicals from the surface of fruits and vegetables, but not all pesticide residues can be removed by washing.
