What used to be an exclusive item seen inside health foods stores, now it is common sight in your local supermarket. Buying organic products online has also become a popular trend due to its convenience and potential cost savings.
But when you pick up an organic apple vs a conventional apple; they both look and smell relatively similar. But the organic apple comes with a heftier price tag, which are in part due to more expensive farming practices. What exactly makes organic food different, and does it justify the bigger cost?
The word "organic" refers to the way farmers grow and process agricultural products without the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides or other artificial chemicals. These products include fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy products and meat.
They aren’t the same thing. Generally, ‘natural’ on a food label means that no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives are present. In order to be ‘organic’, the methods and materials used to produce the food ingredient don’t involve pesticides, chemical fertilizers, or artificial chemicals.
